OHS Specialist
Reporting into our Director, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), the OHS Specialist has the overall goal of supporting the development and implementation of PTI’s corporate OHS, Claims Management, and Recovery at Work programs within their region.
This position will promote a risk-forward culture of safety by working closely with regional management and colleagues to motivate and encourage a safe working environment. Key components of the role will be retaining the company’s OHS certifications, providing technical guidance and support OHS document development for project activities, performing site inspections, maintaining regional OHS statistics, coordinating OHS investigations and safety committee activities, plus implementing corporate OHS initiatives to effectively support our colleagues. Some travel to support PTI’s site safety standards is required, approx.10-25% of time.
PTI believes in continuous and ongoing learning at every level of our organization. The OHS Specialist will also be responsible for providing ongoing support, training and education to local managers and staff with regards to OHS.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee OHS, Claims Management, and Recovery at Work programs as they relate to operations in that region.
- Work closely with key internal and external stakeholders, as well as participate in the effective development and implementation of OHS policies, programs, plans, assessments, and communications that support the safe delivery of work on client/general contractor project sites.
- Attend project sites to validate the correct implementation of OHS processes according to legislative, corporate, and site-specific requirements, and provide guidance and coaching to local operational teams where required.
- Facilitate and lead incident investigations in the designated region, ensuring that action plans are developed and completed in a timely manner.
- Actively work to identify system, program and training opportunities, and ensure strategies are implemented and aligned with corporate OHS requirements.
- Monitor and assess worker’s compensation claims for legitimacy, possible challenge, trends analysis and cost control.
- Support management to facilitate the early and safe return to work for employees who are injured or become ill at work.
- Provide lagging statistical information and support the development of leading key performance indicators in a meaningful format for local leaders and management teams to support effective decision-making.
- Coordinate the performance of annual OHS audits and monitor the status of corrective actions to ensure that they are completed on time.
- Maintain awareness of regional OHS legislation as it applies to the activities that PTI performs.
- Support the maintenance of client compliance portal accounts with ISNetworld, ComplyWorks, Avetta etc.
- Support the OHS Team to develop, implement, and monitor corporate initiatives relating to OHS.
- Additional related duties may be assigned as this position and the organization evolves.
- 3+ years of progressive experience in OHS in a construction environment
- A Degree/Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, or Industrial Hygiene, or the equivalent in education and directly related construction safety experience
- Experience reviewing and interpreting OHS legislation relating to construction health and safety in the region
- Demonstratable knowledge of construction industry best practices to ensure worker health and safety when performing their duties.
- Experience in an OHS role within multi-employer construction work sites, preferably on behalf of a prime contractor.
- Experience developing construction project OHS documentation, performing risk assessments, and building exposure control plans for hazardous materials (lead, asbestos, silica etc.) and confined spaces.
- A certified auditor, or be willing to complete the necessary training courses to certify.
- Candidates who have achieved or are actively working towards professional OHS designations (NCSO, CRSP, ROH etc.).
- Experience using contractor compliance portals such as ISNetworld, ComplyWorks, Avetta etc.
- Basic understanding of ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 standards
- Experience working with learning management systems and performing training gap analysis
- Effective organizational, prioritization and time management skills.
- A competent communicator who is capable of explaining complex information clearly, and is able to coach colleagues on the correct application of legislative and company requirements.
- Ability to read, write and speak effectively in English
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications
- Ability to work flexible hours as dictated by the requirements of the position, including travel to other regions were Paladin operates
- Possession of a Class 5 driving license and access to a personal vehicle for site visits within AB
- Ability to implement OHS strategies with minimal supervision
- Good grasp of business acumen and common language within industries supported
- Must be able to effectively communicate in English, (ie see, hear, speak and write clearly) in order to communicate with colleagues and/or customers
- Manual dexterity required for occasional reaching, lifting of light office objects, and operating office equipment
- Sitting, standing, walking in office environments and construction sites
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may be required to work at heights over 1.8m (6 feet)
- The office is clean, orderly, properly lighted and ventilated. Noise levels are considered low to moderate
- Will be required to be on site with customers or contractors, with or without Paladin colleagues to manage the expectations and deliverables. Sites range from general office environments to new construction.
- Driving to customer sites is required
- Limited overnight travel may be required
